Pakistan

Here is a short little clip saying that the Prime Minister of Pakistan recently came out and said that the Pakistani government is going to make a better effort and do more to contain terrorism and extremism in Pakistan.
This is a very big step for Pakistan, having a country in the Middle East make an effort to lower the threat and occurrence of terrorism is definitely a step in the right direction. This could be a turning point, by setting an example of the ability for Middle Eastern countries to do so. I am not saying this will stop terrorism, but sometimes it only takes one person/country to take a step in the right direction for others to do the same.

Well, to be honest this isn't exactly a revelation. Musharraf has been coerced diplomatically and militarily by both the US and India to get tougher on Islamic extremists. He does it for a little while, but I don't know how hard of a line he's going to draw.

Once again, I'm sorry about it saying I'm Michael Powers...it's Ian.

The significant thing is that it's the Prime Minister, not Musharraf that's saying Pakistan will become tougher on terrorists. Although Islamic parties took a hit in the their popularity during the past election, they still hold some sway in the country, especially in the western rural mountainous region. The fact that the Prime Minister is the representative of all the parties and is making statements such as that is surprising, but good if you're an American.

Obviously it's good that the government's rhetoric is headed in the right direction (supporting the USA), but I don't think that the Prime Minister's statement will result in any new ground-breaking developments. The Western regions of Pakistan just seem too autonomous for the government in Islamabad to really pressure them in any meaningful way short of violence, and I don't see that happening. Combined with the recent political turmoil in Pakistan, I'm skeptical of any grand claims. However, as said before, this statement is a positive sign, one that just needs some action to back it up.
